The Scoop #23

Snow and Bright Lights

Rhubarb and apple pop tarts, these are not the pop tarts of my childhood, but that is a good thing!

Quinoa is supposed to be THE food of 2014, I thought it was the food of 2013, but guess not! Try it out in this strawberry quinoa parfait!

Brownies with a cool minty layer? I will take the whole tray!

New years resolution: chocolate chip cheesecake! Who cares about “thigh anxiety” when there is cheesecake!

Just bought my first chia seeds, no not seeds for a chia pet, because of this chia pudding.

You had me at stars, oh and it is veggie packed, score!

Potato soup is a treat for me, but it is often too heavy on the dairy for me, so this being vegan is just the solution for me!

I’ve got my clementines waiting on the counter for these easy clementine preserves.

This has to be the easiest chocolate mousse ever.

I think I have talked about my cinnamon bun obsession, well it is really any morning bun, just like these marzipan and orange blossom morning buns!

How gorgeous is this cherry vanilla champagne cake?

Gift Guide 2013

Yup, I am going to do a gift guide even though all the polite and timely bloggers did theirs weeks ago and by now you are probably done your holiday shopping! Well I am not and here’s to those like me who haven’t quite wrapped it all up yet (pun intended)! Or haven’t finished shopping yet…who me?!

Since this is late, here is a little tip if you can’t get your gifts shipped in time! Print out a picture of the gift, then wrap it in a small box maybe with some rocks or weights, and then put that box in a bigger box, and continue until you feel content. Then on Christmas morning watch your loved one’s face light up when they see a big box, and then you watch excitedly as they open box upon box. I have been on the receiving end of this…

Or if you’re not into that, sign up for Amazon Prime, they give you a free 30 day trial! Amazon Prime gives you free two day shipping on everything you order! With it, you still have 5 days to order and get it in time for Christmas!

Beats Solo Headphones I have Beats Solo for studying and I adore them! They block out extraneous noises around you, but you can still hear what needs to be heard, like a fire alarm! They are pricey, but these will outlast the dozens of pairs you would by in place of these, and the total probably comes out to be about the same!

Shark Rocket Vacuum Looking for a new vacuum? I just got one of these and whoa does this one have power without bulk! This one PULLS me across the carpet sometimes and picks up tons of dust!

Samsung  32-Inch Smart LED HDTV I am in love with this TV. It is a smart TV, so no need for extra boxes to access Hulu and Netflix, it’s all on there! There is even a workout channel, but I haven’t checked that out yet… Again this is pricey, but would be great as a family present for all to enjoy!

Canon EOS 60D DSLR Camera This is the camera I have used for my blog pictures since last December and I cannot recommend it enough!! Pictures are crystal clear. If I could figure how to change the aperture so can you!

Kitchen Gifts:

Bodum Electric Water Kettle Boils water in minutes! Great for piping hot tea or oatmeal in the morning!

Silpat Non-Stick Baking Mats A baking must! I always use these when making cookies! I have never had a problem with sticking and they are eco-friendly because you don’t need to use new parchment paper each time!

KitchenAid Classic Mixing Bowls I have TWO sets of these! They’re my go-to bowls when I am baking! I use the smaller one for wet ingredients and the larger ones for dry! They’re durable enough to be used with an electric hand-mixer!

OXO Good Grips Cherry Pitter It may not be cherry season, but this is not just for cherries, it can be used to pit olives too! This makes cherry pitting painless, trust me I was able to pit two pounds of cherries with my hand that was all bandaged up after the dog bite! And I had no trouble at all!

Perfect Beaker with Seal I learned about this at the King Arthur Flour Baking Class that I took and it is my favorite for measuring all my liquids!

Tovolo Silicone Spatula These are heat resistant up to 600 degrees F! So, I cook scrambled eggs with mine! They are also useful when scraping down mixing bowls and getting every last drop out of them!

Cuisinart Smart Stick 2-Speed Immersion Hand Blender I use this to smooth out tomato sauces, cranberry sauces and soups! I even use it to make milkshakes because I don’t have a real blender! And my milkshakes totally bring all the boys to the yard!

DIY Almond-Brown Sugar Lip and Hand Scrub

I think it was two years ago that I first heard of a “lip scrub” and I totally passed it off as unnecessary. Scrub my lips, um, for what reason? I can barely get myself to wash my face, forget I said that… Well, fast forward to now, this winter my lips are chapped as ever (and no, not for that reason, get your mind out of the gutter!)! Since, we are getting around the holidays, many DIYs have been floating around the interwebs and I keep seeing DIY lip scrubs among other beauty products. Finally, I got off my lazy bum and made one!

I didn’t have high expectations for this scrub, but BOY OH BOY do I love it! Now I get giddy when I go to use my lip scrub! You scrub away all your dry skin, and then when you rinse it off with warm water the scrub melts into your skin and feels all buttery and smooth (my favorite part)! Not only does it make your lips super soft, but it tastes kind of good…inevitably some will get in your mouth! Not only can this be a lip scrub, but I decided to try it out on my hands and it was wonderful! After using the scrub just make sure to MOISTURIZE!
Mix up a bigger batch, put it in cute containers, slap a ribbon on them and you have got yourself a sweet life present for anyone on your list!

DIY Almond-Brown Sugar Lip and Hand Scrub
2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
1 Tablespoon Almond Oil (Or Olive Oil)

1. Combine almond oil and brown sugar, stir until thoroughly combined.
2. To use, place dime sized amount of scrub on finger and gently scrub lips for 15-30 seconds. Rinse lips off with warm water. Be sure to moisturize with lip balm afterwards. For hands, moisten hands with warm water, scrub hands with a quarter sized amounts for 30-60 seconds, and rinse off with warm water. Follow up with a moisturizing lotion!

Obviously, if you are allergic to any of the ingredients DO NOT USE this scrub!

Fall Recipe Round-Up

I have yet to bust open the cans of pumpkin eagerly waiting in my pantry, nor have I have even sliced an apple to eat!  So, lately I have been feeling guilty because it seems I have abandoned you! As compensation, I decided that I would do a fall recipe round-up and share some of the fall recipes I have been drooling over!

For even more fall recipes, follow my Pump(kin) Iron  and A is For Apple  Pinterest boards!
Also feel free to share your fall recipes in the comments!

Without further ado, and in no particular order…

1. Pumpkin Honey Cornbread by Bakelette (Yep, my own post, but it’s totally fall flavorful and I will be making it soon!)

2. Brown Butter Ginger Apple Torte by Blahnik Baker  It’s a spice cake sandwiched around a brown butter apple filling!

3. Pumpkin Fudge Brownies by Heather Christo Just look at the “crust” (what do you call that thin layer on top of brownies anyways?) on top! They are thin brownies, meaning you can enjoy multiples!

4. Cinnamon Sugar Apple Cake by Pinch of Yum An apple cake made with simple ingredients, just mix, pour, top and bake!

5. Pumpkin Donut Muffins by Crunchy Creamy Sweet  You know my love of donuts, so my including these should come as no surprise!

6. Apple Pie Ice Cream by Tracey’s Culinary Adventures I have fond memories of working in an ice cream shop and this was one of the seasonal flavors rolled out in fall! I would love to recreate it myself! I would maybe substitute baked pie crust for the snicker doodles, just for authenticity to that ice cream shop!

7. Pumpkin Gingerbread Waffles by In Sock Monkey Slippers You also probably know about my love of waffles (yet, I still haven’t not shared a waffle recipe with you, but that is beside the point)! What about these for breakfast on Thanksgiving? Or will you be too full for later that day?

8. Teddie’s Apple Cake by Food52 I don’t have a tube pan, but I still want to make this even if it will not be as crispy!

9. Bourbon Bacon Pecan Sticky Buns by Country Cleaver If you feel an explanation is necessary just reread the title of that recipe! Oh my gosh all that goodness!

10. Apple Harvest Bread by Spiced I have been dying over this bread for at least a week now! I think it would make for a superb turkey and cheddar panini! Now I want one…

11. Pumpkin Magic Brownies by Dine and Dish I want to slather myself in that fluffy frosting as if it were body butter. Hope that image didn’t scar you forever.

12. Pumpkin Pie Bagels by Seasons and Suppers I have never made bagels, which is weird seeing as I absolutely love eating them! But, add pumpkin and these are a must for fall!

13. Apple Cider Caramel Glazed Pound Cake by Culinary Concoctions by Peabody Pound cakes are excellent for afternoon nibbles here and there! Now you can have one for fall!
14. Pumpkin Caramel Spice Cronuts by Foodness Gracious I heard the cronut’s 15 minutes are fame are up (I never got to taste one. Wah.), but if anyone is still on that train, here is a recipe for ’em you may want to try!

15. Roasted Squash and Pear Soup by Verses from my Kitchen I still have a ton of squash from my garden waiting to be roasted, pureed and made into deliciousness! This might just have to happen!

The Scoop #22

Maple-pumpkin stack cake. Fall is most certainly here.

I love biscuits, and this recipe is for drop biscuits, which makes them totally acceptable if you’re uber lazy like me.

Croatia is on my list of places to go, and this is a recipe for Croatian sweet walnut chocolate bread, which will satisfy my desire to travel to Croatia….for now at least.

Now that fall is here, I can proclaim my love of MAPLE (except don’t you tap syrup in the spring? whatever about formalities…..). This maple sugar cake might just be the first maple thing that I bake!

Homemade scented room diffusers.  I just bought a diffuser, but that was before I knew you could make them! Way cheaper!

Y’all have probably guessed that I love my doggies dearly! Well, here is a list of DIYs for you fellow dog lovers out there to make for your pups! I kind of want to become crafty and make them all. And if you aren’t a dog lover, well shame on you…just kidding, well sort of, just look at the pictures anyways for some cuteness!

More flavors of fall. Pumpkin spice galette.

I will try to get these posts back on schedule, but no guarantees as usual! Believe me, I would rather be baking and blogging, but got to do what I have go to do.

What link love do you want to share?
